Year In Review

What a great fitness year it was for me.  Growing up I was always an athlete.  I played every sport possible until focusing on Basketball and Track in High School.  I did well enough as a hurdler to earn a partial scholarship to run for the University of Idaho.  After college I stayed active with Park and Rec. leagues and general working out.  As time passed, and life got more interesting and a lot busier the athlete part of me went away and I became like so many others my age just watching on the sidelines.  Little did I know that my wife, someone who by her own admission was never totally interested in athletics, would be the one to bring back my inner athlete.  She is my total inspiration and the reason I continue to push myself with every workout and/or training session I do.  Since last New Years Eve I have finished the STP Cycling Classic and the local Palouse sprint triathlon.  I have swam over 20,000 yards since July 1, which is about 19,500 more yards then I have swam in my life up to that point.  I have dropped close to 15 pounds and kept my weight at a level I have not seen since college.  My cholesterol is back to a healthy range and I feel 20 years younger.  I am running again and remembering what it feels like to get that kick at the end of each run. But most of all I feel like I am back to the athlete I once was many years ago.  This has been a great year to kick start things and I look forward to all the years ahead of me and all the challenges that they will bring.  I would like to wish everyone on sweat365 a happy, healthy new year.  Tomorrow, the first day of 2009, I plan to lay out my goals and race events I plan to enter.  This year was good, but wait until you see what I do next year.  Until then……

Long run on the new treadmill

B and I received a little Christmas money from the folks and decided it was time to upgrade our treadmill.  We have been eyeing a NordicTrack at Costco and bought it the day after Christmas.  Today was my first chance to use it as part of my training and it was amazing.  I love it.  I can actually say that running inside on the treadmill was fun, not as fun as running outside, but better than before.  During my run I reflected on what a great year of fitness it has been for both B and myself.  I had certain goals in mind for next year, but I think I’ll be changing things up a little.  I plan to recap this past year and look ahead to next year on my New Years Eve post, so look out for that.  Until then…

Was it worth it?

I know this workout seems very wimpy, and it was to be honest. But, I have a very good reason for it. The university pool is closing for the holidays next week and if I didn’t make it in today then I would have ended the year with 19,800ish yards swam. That was not going to happen, so I get in 250 quick yards and go over the 20,000 yard mark for the year since joining on July 1. Along with going over 100 total hours and 100 miles for the 6 months I have a nice little collection of milestones. Just wait and see what I do next year!!!
