New 2010 Goals

With my first official half marathon in the books and a new foot injury from the training I have had to change my 2010 goals.  I actually just moved up my overall racing goals by a year so I’m pretty excited about it.  Here is my new list:

1. Half marathon - Done

2. Second half marathon - May 30

3. Open water swim sprint triathlon - July 24

4. Olympic distance triathlon - Aug. 7

5. Better time in local pool swim sprint triathlon - Sept.

6. Third half marathon - Oct./Nov.

I took out the full marathon and the STP in one day.  Less long training days and I start my triathlon training in earnest in 7 weeks.  I plan to lay off running to help my foot recover for those 7 weeks and concentrate on swimming with some bike and more P90X thrown in for good measure.  It’s going to be a great racing year!

Getting the kinks out

My plan was to spin for about half an hour to get the kinks out after my race yesterday (see my race report ) but B asked if I would join her for part of her monster ride today, so I said what the heck and enjoyed a great ride with her.  Another wonderful day and to be honest I felt pretty good.  I am going to enjoy the heck out of my day off tomorrow, that is for sure!

Snake River Canyon Half Marathon Race Report

I write this report the morning after my race with a very, very sore body and a reminder of how hard races are on the old body.  I could have gone for a 13 mile training run and not hurt this much.  What is up with that?  But while my body hurts, my mind feels pretty darn good with what I accomplished.

First off, let’s talk about this race.  I had heard from runners that have run this race in the past to expect big winds (not what you want to hear).  The day of the race I overheard people talk about the cold last year and the snow at the top of the canyon peaks.  This year’s race could not have had better weather for early March.  Race temperatures in the 50’s, maybe in the 60’s at the end.  No real wind to speak of (maybe a little headwind going out, but also a little tailwind coming home).  And how can you beat running along the river canyon, so beautiful!  The other great thing about this race is how flat it it.  They advertised a very flat race profile and they were right on the money.  Overall I give yesterday’s Snake River Canyon Half Marathon a A on the race report card…outstanding event.

As for my effort I give myself a B.  Here is my goal recap:

1. Run like I trained - I did that, walking a minute after every mile I ran.  As much as I wanted to keep running after I hit my first mile I didn’t.  After miles 11 and 12 I ended up walking for two minuets because I felt some cramps creeping in and my foot was hurting.  That may have hurt my time goal just a little.

2. Run across the finish line - Not only did I run across it, I did so with a little kick, only because I heard another runner coming up on me and I was not going to get passed right at the line!

3. Run under 2:15 - Well, I came pretty darn close.  Those extra seconds of walking may have hurt my time a little (see goal #1) and my pace really slowed the last 4 miles, but overall I am pretty happy with my time.  I would not be jumping for joy if I ran 2 minuets under my goal time, so I won’t cry in my coffee because I was 2 minuets over.

4. Have fun -  I had a great time.  I wish that B could have run with me, but she, along with my girls, provided some great race support.  I loved seeing them and they helped push me along.  I love you guys, thanks for being there for me.

So, a B grade for me because I could not get under my goal time, but that is the nice thing about these races…you always have another goal to shoot for.  B wants me to bike with her for one out of the 3.5 hours she has to ride today…we will see.

Race Goals

Just over 24 hours from right now my 2010 racing season kicks off with the Snake River Canyon half marathon.  I am getting pretty excited to get in a race again after a long layoff.  I missed my first chance to run my first every half marathon last fall with a left foot injury.  I have that same injury in my right foot now but with dedicated treatment and my new, amazing shoes from Brooks I am ready to run.  My goals are pretty simple for this race:

1. Run like I trained - That means walking 1 minuet for every mile I run.  At the end I’ll see how I feel and if I want to pick up the pace.

2. Run across the finish line - I will never, every walk across another finish line!

3. Run under 2:15 - I think I can do it, but with a bum foot we will see.  I ultimatly want to run a half uner 2 hours, maybe tomorrow will be that half!

4. Have fun -  I will have fun with this race, no worries about that!

Race report should come tomorrow afternoon while enjoying a cold Pipeline Porter!  Wish me luck.

Run - 3.1 miles - 34:23

I was planning another swim today to give my foot a real rest and give myself a better chance of running my first ever half marathon on Saturday.  My daughter ended up getting sick so I am staying home with her, meaning no pool today.  So, I decided to lace up the new Brooks Addiction running shoes and give the foot a try on the treadmill.  My last run was a 10 miler 12 days ago.

Well, I am happy to report after 3.1 miles the foot felt great, THANKS BROOKS!!!  I was only going to run for 30 mins., but thought 3.1 miles was appropriate given my last run was 10.   I am 100% ready for the half marathlon on Saturday and excited to get after it.  I’ll post my race goals later today or tomorrow during my rest day.
